You Are What You… Put On Your Skin

With so many things to worry about in life, what’s in your shampoo, mascara, and face lotion may be low on your list. However, with recent attention in Prevention Magazine, Good Morning America, The Today Show and more, it’s getting harder to ignore the facts – what we put on our skin matters. As the tagline of this blog implies, there is so much more to our well being than the food we eat.

If you’re reading this, you likely care about your health and living a long, vibrant life.

If you’re like me, you do your best to eat well when you’re at home (notice I didn’t say perfectly).

You are always looking for small ways to streamline dinners.

You continue to make baby steps towards a healthier lifestyle – progress not perfection, after all.

You care about all of this because first and foremost, you want to feel your very best every single day.

You have days that are a true struggle – you eat something and feel guilty about it afterwards, and then you get caught in a vicious cycle.

We’ve all been there.

Health is multi-layered and sometimes feels like a frustrating puzzle.

There is so much in our environment that we can’t control – exposure to pollution, chemicals, problems with our food system. The thing we can have full control over, starting with a few changes, are the products we use on our bodies daily. The average person uses 12 products before they walk out the door in the morning. These products, some of them sitting on your skin for the whole day, absorb into our bloodstream within one minute. Our skin is our largest organ and absorbs what we put on it.

The reality is there is an extreme lack of regulation in the personal care industry. This means that companies can call their products organic, natural, clean – but these words mean very little, if anything. There are over 1,400 hundred ingredients banned from use in personal care products in the EU. Only 30 are banned here in the US. At Beautycounter, we do not use over 1,500 harmful and potentially harmful ingredients.

Knowledge is power, and when we know better, we do better. Take 2018 to get yourself educated, to learn what is in your products. Take advantage of this incredible resource, www.ewg.org/skindeep – a searchable database with over 70,000 personal care products. Search for your body lotion, your deodorant, your body soap. Each ingredient is rated for toxicity. Take this information as empowerment to make safer choices for yourself and for your family.

Take control of the things you can control. To your great health
